Become an OG Tutor

Below are the requirements for Literacy Nassau's Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) associate-level training course and practicum.
  • Candidates complete a week-long initial 30-hour course in mid-August via a hybrid model of face-to-face live training at our tutoring center in Wantagh along with virtual Zoom sessions.

  • After completion, we will work to match each candidate with an appropriate student for practicum work.

  • Candidates must complete a supervised, 100-hour practicum with a student who has dyslexia. Expect the practicum to begin in September and end in June.

  • Each candidate must create space in his/her personal schedule during after-school, evening, and/or weekend hours to consistently meet with a student 3 times a week at our facility in Wantagh for the unpaid practicum.

  • Candidates must complete 10 video observations.

  • Candidates will be expected to create lesson plans for every tutoring session.

  • Candidates must attend 30 additional hours of trainings which will occur on 3 mandatory weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) during the fall.  The entire associate-level course is 60 hours of instruction.

  • Candidates will also be expected to complete all mandatory readings from the Orton-Gillingham (OGA) Associate Level Reading List and write/submit a brief report on each reading. The reading list and articles can be found at this link: https://www.ortonacademy.org/training-certification/associate-level/

  • Expect to dedicate a minimum of 10 hours a week on OG (including tutoring and lesson planning).

  • Upon completion of all requirements, candidates will be expected to complete and submit an online application directly to the OGA.
