Literacy Nassau is a Long Island-based not-for-profit organization that makes literacy services accessible to disadvantaged populations of all ages by providing donation-based language-building programs.

We train volunteers to teach adult learners (ages 18 and older).  Volunteers are recruited from all over Long Island and are trained and supported by Literacy Nassau staff throughout the year.

We offer a variety of free, or donation-based, programs:

  • Small group instruction for (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) adult English language learners

  • Citizenship preparation classes

  • Next Chapter Book Clubs and Jot It Down Writing Clubs for adults with developmental disabilities

  • Small group instruction for adult basic literacy learners

  • Individualized, multi-sensory Orton-Gillingham instruction for children with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities
