Step 1 Orientation for New Volunteers

Why am I required to participate in a volunteer orientation?

Literacy Nassau is committed to ensuring that we place volunteers in a role that speaks to them. Our face-to-face orientation meeting reviews our mission and history and gives an overview of each of our programs.

Our volunteer opportunities are based on enrollment and we will do our best to accommodate your schedule. Please note that volunteers work with adult population only.

Orientation Schedule

Volunteers Needed for:

Basic Literacy (BL) volunteers will work with adults who are usually native born and speak English. These students either weren't afforded the appropriate chances to be educated or had undiagnosed learning disabilities as children that prohibited them from learning. Training will include instruction in the Orton-Gillingham approach to teach adult BL students the OG principles of reading and writing. You will be required to meet with a group of 2-3 students at least twice a week.

Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) volunteers work in small book clubs of 6-8 people and they offer adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to read for pleasure and socialize in the community. Guided by a pair of trained volunteer facilitators, this group meets weekly for an hour at select libraries and cafes across Nassau county.

If you are interested in one of these opportunities, please choose the orientation meeting you would like to attend on the registration form:

Wednesday, 9/17 from 6:00-7:00pm

Thursday, 9/18 from 10:00am-11:00am

Meetings are in-person at our office located at Literacy Nassau - 1 Ivy Lane in Wantagh.
