Other Volunteer Opportunities

Tutors/ Conversation Circle Leaders

Provide one-to-one or small group instruction to adults who seek help with reading, writing or speaking English. Tutors must first attend a training workshop, then are matched with students based on mutual availability. Tutors are asked to commit 2 hours per week to meet with their student(s) in public locations, generally local libraries. To learn more, read FAQs About Tutoring.

  Office Support
People

Answer phones and perform other administrative activities including filing, copying, collating,

Graphic Designers

Design flyers, forms, brochures and event materials using Microsoft Office products including Microsoft Publisher.

Writers Write press releases, media alerts and email blasts.

Outreach
Volunteers

Contact tutors and/or students for information and to lend support.

 

Photographers

Use a digital camera to take pictures at LN events, training sessions, tutoring session &/or speaking engagements.


Student Assessors

Interview and evaluate students using TABE and BEST Plus tests.


 

Mailing Committee
Members

Fold, stuff and label envelopes and/or seal and mail newsletters.

Computer Lab  Facilitators

Assist students and tutors who use the computer lab.

 

Computer Specialists

Provide technological guidance and/or support to Literacy Nassau staff and computer lab volunteers.

Curriculum Developers

Develop curricula and/or lesson plans for new structured programs. Develop programs or activities for tutors to use with their students.

 

Grant Writers

Draft grant proposals to secure funding from private and government foundations.

In-Service Training Presenters

Conduct in-service trainings on topics that range from improving tutor skills to general or life skills information for tutors and students. Ideas welcome!

 

Event Planners

Plan, prepare, set-up, coordinate and clean-up existing events (Bridge, (un)Scrabble, Recognition Night). Possible development of new events.

Speaker’s Bureau
Members

Speak to community groups, professional associations, businesses and other organizations to recruit supporters, volunteers and students.

 

Corporate Advisory Council Members

For senior level managers and executives.  Serve as ambassador, advocate, advisor for Literacy Nassau. Participate in resource development activities and events.
