Volunteer Opportunities at Freeport-Based Literacy Nassau
April 13 , 2009
Out of Work? Downsized? Hours Cut Back? It’s Time to Volunteer!
(Long Island, N.Y.) President Obama’s public calls for service appear to have touched a chord among the American people. His participation in and promotion of the MLK National Day of Service helped to more than double the number of service projects undertaken — from 5,000 to 13,000 – compared to the year before. An even larger factor in the current surge of volunteers is the increasing numbers of people who now find themselves unemployed.
Volunteer opportunities offer a positive experience for individuals who suddenly have time on their hands and the desire to share their skills and talents in a meaningful way. And Freeport-based Literacy Nassau has plenty of opportunities. According to Executive Director Tina Sanacore, “Literacy Nassau has volunteer opportunities regardless of an individual’s age, experience or background. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, yet all have one thing in common: the desire to make a difference by contributing personal time and talents to the cause of adult literacy.”
Adds Ms. Sanacore, “Volunteerism is one of the unsung ways to effectively network with those whom an individual may never have come into contact. Especially for someone in job transition, volunteering at Literacy Nassau provides a unique chance to tap into one’s altruistic side, while meeting others who can help reposition a career. Our corporate advisory committee is comprised of senior level managers and executives who serve as ambassadors, advocates, and advisors for Literacy Nassau, and participate in resource development activities and events.”
Among the many other volunteer opportunities offered by Literacy Nassau are tutors and conversation circle leaders, outreach volunteers, student assessors, computer lab facilitators and computer specialists, in-service training presenters, speaker’s bureau members, and office support people.
Literacy Nassau’s greatest need is for volunteer tutors. One particular story drives home this need. Recently, a 25 year-old waiting student called to find out how long it will take to find him a tutor. Though he graduated from a local high school, he reads at just over the second grade level, doesn’t have a driver’s license, and recently lost his construction job because of an injury. He said with everything going on out there he needs to start moving on his reading. This story is not unique. Literacy Nassau has provided literacy instruction to over 30,000 adults since 1968, and the demand for tutors remains. Today over 200 students are waiting for tutors.
In the words of Senator Orrin Hatch, co-sponsor with Senator Edward Kennedy of the recently adopted Serve America Act, “Volunteer service is the lifeblood of our nation. It brings out the best in our people and strengthens our communities. That is why the Serve America Act is so important. This historic legislation will inspire civic-minded Americans across the nation to raise the bar of service and meet every challenge.”
